On paper, it might be easy to confuse Black Oud and LM Parfums much buzzed-about Hard Leather; both, after all, share heavy doses of oud, musky woods, and incense. But if the two were separated at birth, with Hard Leather being raised in a particularly animal-heavy barnyard, then Black Oud, with its suave, sophisticated blend of spices and refined woodsiness, was the one adopted into blue-blooded aristocracy. Subtle where HL is brutal, refined in its masculinity, Black Oud is a sensual stunner for anyone who knows that the truly powerful never try to be noticed until the time is exactly right.
Black Oud opens spicy, with nutmeg and cumin top notes that tickle the palate, projecting sweetness over an incense that starts as background noise and slowly but assuredly increases in power. As the smokiness of the incense swells, it opens the door for the deep, spectacular Indonesian oud- no medicinal synthetics here- which hums and swirls at a volume in balance with the rest of the composition, never overwhelming, but rather filling in the gaps such that every third sniff seems to produce a deep, utterly intoxicating rush of agarwood. Creamy, savory Mysore sandalwood combines with cedar to fill out the woodsiness of the base, while animalic musks are deployed in a much more subtle manner alongside amber and vanilla for a satisfyingly rounded drydown. Some days, you feel like bowling over the whole world with the power of your sexiness. But for the days where you want to keep your voice down but still have a serious impact, Black Oud is as good as it gets.
Nutmeg, cumin, incense, oud wood, labdanum, sandalwood, cedar, civet, castoreum, vanilla, and amber.
